How to Cancel Insurance After Donating in New Mexico

Cancel only after pickup and title hand-off, and complete any required plate or registration steps first so the car is not uninsured while still yours.

Cancel insurance only after the donated car has been picked up and the title has been handed off. Use the pickup/title-transfer date as the insurance end date. Do not cancel early; an uninsured loss can still be yours while you legally own the car, and some states penalize an insurance lapse on a still-registered vehicle.

If the New Mexico DMV requires plate or registration action first, finish that before you cancel. Then ask your insurer about any prorated refund.

The right cancellation sequence

1

Confirm pickup and title hand-off

Make sure the vehicle is no longer in your possession and the title hand-off is complete. Keep the donation pickup receipt, the signed title copy if you have one, and any confirmation from AutoLift. If pickup is still imminent, keep the insurance active until the driver leaves with the car and the ownership paperwork is handed over.

2

Handle plates or registration first

Before calling your insurer, check whether your state requires plates to be returned, registration to be canceled, or a transfer notice to be filed before insurance ends. Some states make plate surrender part of stopping coverage. Others let you keep plates but expect a sale, transfer, or donation report. If you are unsure which rule applies, confirm the order with the New Mexico DMV and follow that instruction first.

3

Call with the donation date

Call your insurance company after the pickup and title hand-off are complete. Give the donation date as the effective date for the change. That date should match the day the car was picked up and title was handed off. If the insurer asks for proof, offer the pickup receipt or donation paperwork and ask what format they need for their file.

4

Remove or cancel coverage

If this is a multi-car policy, ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle and keep coverage active on the other vehicles. If the donated car was the only vehicle on the policy, ask to cancel the policy effective on the pickup/title-transfer date. If you still drive another vehicle, keep continuous coverage in place so you do not create a gap.

5

Request any prorated refund

If you paid ahead, ask whether the unused premium will be refunded on a prorated basis. The refund amount depends on your policy terms, the effective date, and any amounts still owed. Ask how the refund will be sent, when it will be processed, and whether you will receive a final statement showing the vehicle removal or policy cancellation.

6

Keep written confirmation

Before you end the call, request written confirmation. It should show the vehicle, the effective date, and whether the policy was canceled or only the donated car was removed. Save that confirmation with the title, pickup receipt, refund note, and donation records. Also keep it near the AutoLift release-of-liability guide so your paperwork stays together.

What to have ready

Have a short file ready before you call. It helps the insurer use the correct date and avoids a second call.

  • AutoLift pickup receipt or donation confirmation.
  • Signed title information or a copy for your records, if available.
  • License plate and registration information.
  • Policy number and vehicle identification number.
  • Your mailing address for any refund check.

If the car was insured under a household policy, also have the names of the listed drivers available. The insurer may ask whether anyone will keep driving another covered car after the donation.

Common questions

Can I cancel before pickup if the car is not being driven?

No. Keep insurance active until pickup and title hand-off are complete. Until then, you may still legally own the vehicle. If damage, theft, or an accident happens before the donation is complete, canceling early can leave you without coverage and can create problems if the vehicle is still registered.

What effective date should my insurer use?

Use the pickup/title-transfer date. That is the cleanest date for your records because it matches the day you no longer had the vehicle and the ownership paperwork was handed off. Ask the insurer to show that same date on the cancellation or vehicle-removal confirmation.

Will I get money back after canceling?

Possibly. If you prepaid your premium, many policies return unused premium on a prorated basis. The amount depends on your policy terms, the effective date, and any balance due. Ask for the refund amount, how it will be sent, and a final statement for your records.

What if the donated car was on a policy with other cars?

Do not cancel the whole policy unless that is what you intend. Ask the insurer to remove only the donated vehicle and keep the other vehicles covered. If the donated car was your only insured car, cancel the policy after the pickup and title hand-off are complete.
