In New Mexico, the IRS hard cutoff for claiming your car donation on this year’s taxes is simple: your vehicle must be picked up by December 31, not just promised. With AutoLift, working with Heritage for the Blind, we run pickups Monday–Saturday all year, including Christmas week. In most metro areas, if you contact us on a weekday before early afternoon, we can often schedule same-day or next-day towing. To best protect your year-end tax deduction, call or submit the 2-minute form by December 27 to lock in a December 31 pickup slot. Your tow is free, your car can be non-running, and you’ll get a tax receipt for dollar-500-plus.

Year-end tax deduction facts
December 31 controls the tax year
For IRS purposes, your car donation counts in the year the charity actually takes possession. That means your vehicle must be picked up by December 31 in New Mexico, not just scheduled or promised, to deduct it on this year’s return.
Form 1098-C for higher-value vehicles
If your donated vehicle is sold for more than dollar-500, Heritage for the Blind issues documentation you use with IRS Form 1098-C. This form supports your deduction and shows the charity’s name, sale date, and gross proceeds from the vehicle.
Your deduction is usually the sale price
In most cases, the IRS limits your deduction to the amount the charity receives when your vehicle sells, not the Kelley Blue Book value. AutoLift’s partner sends you a receipt showing that sale amount so you can claim the correct figure on Schedule A.
30-day written acknowledgment
For vehicles sold, the charity generally sends your written acknowledgment within about 30 days of the sale. Even if that paperwork arrives early next year, the key for your deduction year is when the car was picked up—on or before December 31.
Itemizing on Schedule A
To benefit from a car-donation tax deduction, you must itemize deductions on IRS Schedule A. Keep your title, tow paperwork, and the charity’s receipt together so your tax preparer can properly report your New Mexico donation.
