Donate your car by Dec 31 for a 2024 New Mexico tax break

In New Mexico, a 2-minute form or quick call to AutoLift starts your free tow. Schedule pickup by December 31 and the IRS counts your donation for this tax year.

If your car is picked up on or before December 31 in New Mexico, the IRS treats your vehicle donation as a deduction for this tax year—even if the car sells later. With AutoLift, it takes about two minutes to start online or by phone. A local coordinator calls you back within 1–2 business hours, schedules your free tow, and our licensed driver brings the title paperwork right to your driveway. Once the tow is complete, your donation date is locked in for this year’s taxes.

3

Free tow truck arrives at your address

Same day or next business day in most metros

In metro areas like Albuquerque, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces, a licensed tow truck usually arrives the same day or next business day. Rural New Mexico pickups are scheduled as soon as trucks are available. Towing is always free to you.

4

Sign your title at pickup

5–10 minutes at your curb

At pickup, you hand over the keys (if you have them) and sign the title with the driver. The vehicle doesn’t need to run, be registered, or pass inspection. The physical pickup date is what the IRS uses as your official donation date.

AutoLift transports and sells your vehicle. Heritage for the Blind then mails you IRS Form 1098-C or a written acknowledgment within 30 days of the sale, showing the sale price you’ll use to claim your deduction on Schedule A.

Year-end tax deduction facts

Dec 31 pickup locks in this year’s deduction

For IRS purposes, the donation date is the day your vehicle is picked up, not the day it sells. If we tow your car on or before December 31 in New Mexico, you can claim the deduction for this tax year.

IRS Form 1098-C documents your gift

After your car is sold, Heritage for the Blind sends IRS Form 1098-C or a written acknowledgment within 30 days of sale. Keep this with your tax records as proof of your qualified vehicle donation.

Deduction usually equals the sale price

In most cases, the IRS allows you to deduct the actual gross sale price of your donated vehicle, as shown on Form 1098-C. Your tax advisor can help you apply this amount on your Schedule A if you itemize deductions.

You’ll claim it on Schedule A if you itemize

Vehicle donations are a charitable contribution. To benefit, you generally must itemize deductions using Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Ask your tax professional which option is best for your situation.

30-day receipt rule after the sale

The IRS requires that you receive a written acknowledgment within 30 days after the vehicle is sold. AutoLift and Heritage for the Blind mail your 1098-C or receipt promptly so you have documentation ready at tax time.

FAQ

If my car is picked up on December 31 in New Mexico, does it count for this year’s taxes?
Yes. The IRS treats the physical pickup date as your donation date. As long as AutoLift’s tow truck collects your vehicle on or before December 31 anywhere in New Mexico, your donation is considered made in this tax year, even if the car sells weeks later.
How late in December can I schedule and still make the deadline?
You must have the vehicle actually picked up by December 31, so we strongly recommend starting the process several days earlier. December pickup slots in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Las Cruces, and other New Mexico areas fill quickly. Submit the 2-minute form or call now and tell us your deadline so we can prioritize your tow.
My car doesn’t run and has old registration. Can I still donate it?
Yes. In New Mexico, your car does not need to run, pass emissions, or have current registration to be accepted. AutoLift arranges a free tow whether the vehicle is drivable or not. Just have your title ready at pickup and remove your personal belongings from the car.
When will I get my tax receipt for the donation?
After your vehicle is sold, Heritage for the Blind mails IRS Form 1098-C or a written acknowledgment within 30 days of the sale. The timing of the sale does not change your donation year—the pickup date does. Keep that receipt with your records for filing your return.
How is the amount of my deduction determined?
In most cases, your allowable deduction is the vehicle’s gross sale price, which appears on Form 1098-C. There are limited exceptions, but this is the typical rule. Because every tax situation is different, it’s best to consult your tax advisor about how much you can deduct.
Do I have to be home when the tow truck comes?
Whenever possible, it’s best for you to be present to sign the title and hand over the keys. In some New Mexico situations we can arrange an alternative, but title paperwork must be completed correctly. Your coordinator will walk you through options during scheduling, especially for year-end pickups.
Is AutoLift working with a real charity for my car donation?
Yes. AutoLift handles vehicle donations that benefit Heritage for the Blind, a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 58-2164446). Proceeds support services for people who are blind or visually impaired. You receive a valid charitable contribution receipt recognized by the IRS.
